Abstract: cf. CA 58, 993a. Monoclinic Cu(NH3)2CO3 has a 5.63, b 10.54, c 7.47 A., β 98°, Z = 4. The CO3 group behaves as a chelating ligand occupying 2 positions in the 1st coordination sphere of Cu. The O.sbd.Cu.sbd.O bond angle is 67°, the Cu.sbd.O distances are 1.82 and 2.05 A., resp. The 2 NH3 groups in sq. planar coordination around Cu are cis, the Cu.sbd.N being 1.81 and 2.02 A., resp. Cu is displaced from the plane of 4 ligands by 0.16 A. The 5-fold coordination is completed by an O from the neighboring mol., Cu.sbd.O being 2.55 A. The closeness of NH3 groups to neighboring CO3 groups indicates H bonding.
