Phthalides and 1,3-indandione. X. Condensation of phthalic anhydride with arylacetic acids under the conditions of the Perkin reaction

Abstract: cf. preceding abstr. The effect of substituents of monosubstituted phenylacetic acids on the condensation capacity of these acids with a phthalic anhydride under the conditions of the Perkin reaction was described. The condensation capability is dependent on the substituent and the condensation is influenced in a qual. similar way as the dissocn. consts. of acids, that is, the condensation capability increases with increasing acidity. From exptl. detns. was derived: log t = (b - log K/K0)/a, where K is the dissocn. const. of substituted phenylacetic acid, K0 that of phenylacetic acid, t the condensation temp., and a and b are consts. exptl. detd.
