Reaction of ammonium sulfite and ammonium bisulfite with formaldehyde

Abstract: The reaction of NH₄ salts of H₂SO3 with HCHO and in the presence of (NH₄)₂SO4 was described. By applying a proper indicator, such as methyl red, phenolphthalein, or cresol red, N can be detd. in mixts. of (NH₄)₂SO₄ and (NH₄)₂SO₃ and in the mixt. of (NH₄)₂SO₄ with NH₄HSO₃. The results can be applied in the analysis of sulfite liquor.
