Mutually related effect of ligands in copper(II) complexes

Abstract: The relation of oxidn.-redn. reactions in Cu(II) complexes to the mutually related effect of ligands over the central atom is described. When some ligands enter the inner co.ovrddot.ordination sphere of Cu(II)-X (X = Cl, Br, I, CN, SCN) Cu(II) is reduced to Cu(I) and bound X- is oxidized to X (CuCl2, CuBr2, and Cu(SCN)2 with Me2CO). Some ligands (NH3) stabilize Cu(II)-X against oxidn.-redn. changes, which explains the relative stability of CuI2(NH3)2. If the inner co.ovrddot.ordination sphere of a Cu(II) complex is homogeneous, the conditions are not favorable for the change in Cu(II)-X, which explains the relative stability of Cu(CN)42-. Decreasing electron release of X toward Cu(II) is in the order: thiourea and some org. C:S compds., ketones (Me2CO, methyl ethyl ketone, diethyl ketone), ether, alcs., H2O, NH3, and pyridine, and some org. compds. bound to Cu through N. 66 references.
