Cross-linking of polyethylene with benzoyl peroxide. III. Cross-linkage formation

Abstract: cf. CA 55, 20494i. The cross-linkage formation in polyethylene (I) is caused by benzoyl peroxide (II) with the recombination of polymer radicals. It is similar to that caused by ionizing radiation or by ultraviolet light. The bonds between the macromols. are the result of the chain decompn. of II in I. Quant. expression of the speed of cross-linkage formation is based on the speed of the interaction of polymer radicals, derived from kinetic consts. of the II decompn., and from the transfer of primary radicals on the polymer.
