Abstract: The effect of polythionates on the decompn. of SO2 in H2O during heating at up to 150° for 3.5 hrs. and on sulfite cooking of sprucewood is described. Na tetrathionate (prepd. from Pb thiosulfate, by oxidn. with I and treatment with Na2CO3) accelerates the decompn. of cooking liquor in a similar way and to the same extent as thiosulfate and thus affects adversely the cooking process. It was established that in the system H2SO3-thiosulfuric-trithionic-tetrathionic acids in aq. soln. the last 3 components can be interconverted, until a state of equil. is achieved. Cf.
