The preparation of α,β-unsaturated ketones derived from acetylpyridines. I

Abstract: A method for the prepn. of α,β-unsatd. ketones, RCH:CHCONC₅H₄ (I), was described. By the condensation of aromatic aldehydes and furfural in pyridine medium with diethylamine as a catalyst these I were prepd. (R, pyridyl isomer, and m.p. given): Ph, 2, 71°; Ph, 3, 84-5°; Ph, 4, 87-8°; 4-MeOC₆H₄, 2, 84° 4MeOC₆H₄, 3, 93°; 4-MeOC₆H₄, 4, 115-16°; 2-HOC₆H₄, 2, 147-8°; 2-HOC₆H₄, 3, 174°; 2-HOC₆H₄, 4, 181-2°; furfuryl, 2, 53-4°; furfuryl, 3, 84°; furfuryl, 4, 77°; 4-Me₂NC₆H₄, 3, 74-5°; 4-Me₂NC₆H₄, 4, 127-8°; 4-O₂NC₆H₄, 2, 154°; 4-O₂NC₆H₄, 3, 186-7°; 3,4-CH₂O₂C₆H₃, 2, 153°; 3,4-CH₂O₂C₆H₃, 3, 154°; 3,4-CH₂O₂C₆H₃, 4, 140°; 3,4-(MeO)₂C₆H₃, 2, 116-17°; 3,4-(MeO)₂C₆H₃, 3, 98°; 3,4-MeO(HO)C₆H₃, 3, 185-6°; 3,4-MeO(HO)C₆H₃, 4, 222°.
