Abstract: cf. CA 54, 7141f. The effect of time on the decompn. of SO2 solns. with the addn. of glucose at 150° in unbuffered and buffered solns. was studied. The unbuffered soln. contg. 2.4% SO2 showed an induction period of 1 to 2 hrs., the buffered soln. with 0.8% NaOH, contg. 3.04% SO2 or 1.8% SO2 showed an induction period of 2 to 3 hrs. and 5.5 hrs., resp. In both unbuffered and buffered solns. contg. higher amts. of total SO2, a considerable autocatalytic acceleration of the decompn. was reached very rapidly, and resulted in a decrease of SO2, and the formation of appreciable amts. of H2SO4, thiosulfates, and elementary S. In a buffered soln. with a lower SO2no such acceleration was observed. The amts. of thiosulfates in buffered solns. were much higher than in unbuffered solns. The usual time required to complete digestion for a viscose-type pulp is sufficient to cause accelerated decompn. of the cooking acid.
