Abstract: In the radical polymerization initiated by org. peroxides, vinylidene chloride (I) alone polymerizes faster (45% conversion in 1 hr.) than 2-vinylfuran (II) (17% conversion in 1 hr.). In the mixt. of both monomers, the polymerization rate is decreased, it is lower than that of II alone and indirectly related to the amt. of I in the monomer mixt. The values of copolymerization parameters, r1 = 11.7 ± 0.07 and r2 = 0.15 ± 0.014, show that during copolymerization of II with I, II enters into the copolymer to a greater extent than I. A polymer radical ended with a II unit reacts easier with its own monomer than with I (the relation of rate consts. is kaa:kab = 11.7:1), while a polymer radical ended with I prefers the reaction with II to its own polymer (the relation of rate consts. is kbb:kba = 3:20). In block polymerization, the forming polymer prefers the reaction with II in agreement with the rule reported by Bagdasarjan (CA 52, 19411i).
