Komensky University, Bratislava
Abstract: Crystals of tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane are colorless, transparent, cleaving readily, rhombic (pseudotetragonal) with a basic relation of parameters 1.000 ± 0.001:1:0.881 ± 0.001. The point group is 2/mmm. The developed forms are (111), (110), (100). Fracture is excellent in the direction 100. Lattice consts. are: a = 8.80 ± 0.01 kX, b = 8.80 ± 0.01 , c 7.75 ± 0.01, space group Pbnm, no. of mols. in the basic cell Z = 4, nx = 1.518 ± 0.003, ny = 1.538 ± 0.001, nz = 1.547 ± 0.001 parallel with the crystallographic axes X, Y, Z in a given order. The angle of the optical axes is 62.4 ± 0.5 and the optical character is neg. The structure of the matter is in layers in the direction of 100. The m.p. is 131.3°, in disagreement with the literature report of 167-8°.
