Polymerization of vinylidene chloride in the presence of solvents

Abstract: The polymerization of vinylidene chloride initiated by BzO2 (I) at 80° in the presence of 1,1,2-trifluorotrichloroethane (II), CHCl3 (III), C6H6 (IV), and cyclohexanone (V) was described. Based on the concn. of monomer the effect of III on the order of reaction is 1, II from 1 to 3.5, IV from 2 to 1, and V from 1.3 to 0.7. It was detd. that for the concn. of monomer 5.033 moles/l. and for the concn. of I8.26 × 10-3 mole/l. at 60-80°, the total activation energy was 21 kcal./mole for these solvents. The activation energy for block polymerization of vinylidene chloride was 16.0 kcal./mole, in good agreement with previously published data.
