Synthesis of some derivatives of alkaloids. XVI

Abstract: cf. C.A. 53, 17162e. (±)-1-(Hydroxymethyl)pyrrolizidine (picrate m. 190-3°, n24D 1.4987) was synthesized from γ-chlorobutyraldehyde, of its di-Et acetal, and from γ-aminobutyraldehyde di-Et acetal through γ,γbis(diethoxymethyl)di-n-propylamine (I), b2.5 158-61°, n25D 1.4378, and 1-formylpyrrolizidine. It was detd. that the intramol. condensation occurred only at pH 4.2; at pH below 4 polymers formed and at pH above 5 some of the original substance did not react.
