Sulfite cooking of viscose cellulose. IX. The effect of elementary sulfur and thiosulfates on the decomposition of sulfur dioxide

Abstract: cf. C.A. 53, 16533i. SO₂ solns. with the addn. of elementary S and Na₂S₂O₃ were heated in closed glass tubes for 3 1/2 hrs. at 150°. Both S and Na₂S₂O₃ accelerated the decompn. of SO₂, but Na₂S₂O₃ did so more than S; they were more effective in solns. buffered with NaOH than in unbuffered solns. The decompn. increased with increasing SO₂ concn. in the soln. and with the increasing amt. of added S.
