Calibration of visual apparatus for measuring intensity of diffused light

Abstract: The calibration of a visual app. for measuring the intensity of diffused light with standard polystyrene latex with purified tobacco mosaic virus and with horse serum albumin is described. The observed intensity of diffused light was corrected by multiplying it by the n of the soln. For uncorrected Rayleigh's const. for CS2 the value 44.2 × 10-6 was applied. Under these conditions the correct values for the mol. wt. of serum albumin and the thickness of the virus were obtained. The size of polystyrene particles detd. by electron microscope was in good agreement with the results obtained by diffused light. The detn. of reduction angle factor of lighted vol. at 90° is described.
