Abstract: It was proven that in the synthesis of vinyl chloride, the HgCl2 catalyst is mostly deactivated by the excess and unreacted C2H2 and by the humidity of the reaction system. The decrease of catalyst activity caused by the pressure of HgCl2 vapor is negligible in the praxis. The only significant reaction leading partly to the reduction of HgCl2 to Hg2Cl2 and metallic Hg and partly to the formation of elementary C is the reaction between C2H2, HgCl2, and H2O. This finding does not agree with the findings of others, who claim that the inactivation of catalyst is caused by the reduction of C substrate, by the reduction of thermally split C2H2, or by side reactions of C2H2 with elementary Cl.
