Abstract: cf. C.A. 51, 7818b. In the synthesis of CH2:CHCl from C2H2 and HCl, the activity of the HgCl2 catalyst (I) is increased by the addn. of equimolar amts. of H3PO4, H2SO4, and HClO4 to the HgCl2 on active C. The increase in activity of I is dependent on the polarity of the acid and increases in the order H3PO4 < H2SO4 < HClO4. The chem. nature of the mercuric salt does not affect the selectivity of I. The type of active C used for the prepn. of I does affect the activity as well as the selectivity. The higher the amts. of Fe and Zn in the active C, the higher the formation of higher-boiling by-products.
