Crystallographic determination of artabsine

Abstract: Optical consts., dimensions of the elementary cell, and area group of artabsine (I) are described. Crystals of I are short and long prisms and needles. From the goniometric measurements for both shapes the rhombic symmetry 222 and the relation of parameters: a:b:c = 0.5745:1.0:0.5576 were detd. With the immersed liquids in Na light the following values for n were detd.: nαNa = 1.4996; nβNa = 1.6126; nγNa = 1.6277; (γ - α) = 0.1281. The direction of optical axes is parallel to [100]. α,β, and γ are parallel to the c, a, and b axes, resp. The angle of optical axes: 2 VNa(exptl.) = 35°55'; 2 VNa(theoretical) = 36°12'. The sp. gr. ρ is 1.25. The orthorhombic elementary cell has the dimensions: a0 = 9.22; b0 = 15.94; c0 = 8.86 A., and Ζ = 4. The area group is D42-P212121.
