Polarographic determination of O,O-dialkyl hydroxy-ethylphosphonate derived from chloral

Abstract: A polarographic method for the detn. of O,O-dimethyl 2,2,2-trichloro-1-hydroxyethylphosphonate, a known insecticide against flies, which are resistant to DDT, is described. It gives in the basic electrolyte, contg. 30% C2H5OH by vol. and 70% phosphate buffer soln. of pH 6.5 with 0.01% gelatin, a E1/2 = -1.08 v. against the satd. calomel electrode. In the alk. soln. the limiting current decreases because there is dehydrochlorination with the formation of a polarographic inactive dimethyl 2,2-dichlorovinyl phosphate. This method is rapid and simple as compared with the colorimetric one.
