Preparation of ester from finely dispersed sodium cyanoacetate

Abstract: The effect of H₂O, dispersion, and time in prepn. of NCCH₂CO₂Me from finely dispersed technically pure NCCH₂CO₂Na by evapg. soln. after cyaniding CH₂ClCO₂Na in water-free medium of C₆H₆-MeOH at 20° after adding H₂SO₄ was studied. It was found that the reaction speed is not affected by finely dispersed salt. Maximum yield was obtained in 50 hrs. and the presence of H₂O up to 1% in the reaction medium increased the yield 4%. Dispersion had little effect on esterification yield.
