Ion exchange in opium alkaloids

Abstract: For the adsorption and elution of opium alkaloids the best are ion exchangers of type Katex N if they have a firm structure, do not change in the acid or alkali medium, and are resistant against org. solvents. These Katexes have an active SO3H group on the ring. The smaller the granulation of Katexes the better the adsorption. The adsorption of alkaloids takes place well in either H or NH4 cycle, but the NH4 cycle is preferable because the alkaloids are adsorbed in two phases.
