Preparation of phthalimide

Abstract: A new method, which is a modified Vanags' method (CA 34, 19829) for the prepn. of phthalimide was described. Phthalic anhydride (148 g.), 61 g. urea and 300 ml. HOAc was refluxed 3 hrs. After 5 hrs. cooling, crystals of phthalimide, m. 234-7°, were obtained (90-92% yield). The prepd. product was purer than the used raw materials.
