Abstract: The catalytic effect of HCl, H2SO4, H2C2O4, and H3PO4 in concns. of 1-6 × 10-3 g. equiv., on 100 ml. furfuryl alc. (I), on the polycondensation of I is described. The catalytic effect decreases in the order HCl, H2SO4, H2C2O4, H3PO4 and with decreasing degree of dissocn. Polycondensation of I depends on the concn. of protons. A proton adds to the free electron pair of O in the OH group of I. An oxonium cation is formed and decompd. into H2O and a carbonium ion which reacts with an addnl. mol. of I in the α-position with the formation of 2-hydroxymethyl-5-furfurylfuran. Strong mineral acids are not suitable as polycondensation catalysts because they react too rapidly at an acid concn. of 1-2 × 10-3. Polycondensation with H2C2O4 is a 1st-order reaction. By increasing the reaction temp. from 80 to 90°, the rate is increased 1.8 times; and from 90 to 100°, 1.6 times. The activation energy for H2C2O4 was 13.62 ± 0.88 kcal./mol. In the Arrhenius equation, log k = B - A÷T, B = 5.097 and A = 2977.
