Purification of tetrahydrofuran from water and peroxides

Abstract: Various methods for the elimination of H₂O and peroxides in tetrahydrofuran (I) were investigated. The application of a rectification column, 62-cm. long, with an adiabatic cover in a steam of pure and dry N, filled with a mol. sieve and with 5-6 hrs. refluxing produced the best results. The amt. of H₂O was decreased to 0.088 ± 0.003 mg./ml. of I and peroxides to below 5 × 10^-2 micromoles/ml. of I. A design of the device is shown.
