Wetting carbon with molten cryolite

Abstract: The possibility of applying the method of a fixed drop for a study of wetting carbon electrodes with molten cryolite (during electrolytic production of Al) was described. The measured values are neither exact nor reproducible. Max. variation of individual results from the arithmetic av. of 5 parallel measurements was as high as 10%. These inexact results were attributed to the porosity and phys. heterogeneity of the solid phase. For this reason the method of a fixed drop can be applied only for the orientation information.
