Determination of hydroxyl groups in alkali-lignin by methylation with dimethyl sulfate

Abstract: Time and temp. of the reaction affect the results which, under certain conditions, attain a value close to complete methylation. For the detn. of OH groups in alkali-lignin, 3 times repeated 6-hr. methylation with dimethyl sulfate at 60° is recommended.
