The effect of some salts on the optical rotation of tartaric acid

Abstract: The optical rotation of tartaric acid and Na tartrate is decreased by the addn. of NaCl, NaBr, NaI, MgCl₂, CaCl₂, SrCl₂, and BaCl₂. This decrease is a linear function of the polarization of ions of added salts in each individual group of the periodic system. The effect of added salts on the optical rotation of Na tartrate is smaller.
