Innovating in the production of activated carbon through the reuse of fermented biomass

Abstract:

A solution of porcine pancreas lipase was adsorbed using activated carbons derived from both raw cocoa husk and fermented cocoa husk (ACCPr). The resulting immobilized biocatalysts, referred to as ACCPrI and ACCI, were subjected to characterization for textural parameters, thermal and spectroscopic analyses, and enzymatic immobilization capacity. The surface area, pore volume, and hydrolytic activity yield were increased by 5, 15, and 9% respectively, in addition to the selectivity in the adsorption of the enzyme with 52 kDa, when using the fermented biomass in the production of the biocatalyst. Activated carbon with suitable characteristics for enzyme immobilization was able to be obtained using this simple and sustainable method. The integral use of biomass is facilitated by this technology, and the reduction of environmental impacts caused by inadequate disposal of fermented residues is achieved.
