5-methoxycarbonylfurfuryl heteroaryl sulfides and sulfones

Abstract: A series of 5-methoxycarbonylfurfuryl heteroaryl sulfides was prepared via reaction of methyl 5-chloromethylfuran-2-carboxylate with sodium heteroarenethiolates RSNa (R = benzothiazol-2-yl, benzimidazol-2-yl, benzoxazol-2-yl, 1-methylimidazol-2-yl, and 5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl) in anhydrous toluene. Their oxidation with hydrogen peroxide in glacial acetic acid at ambient temperature afforded the corresponding sulfones with the exception of benzoxazole and imidazole derivatives where the heterocyclic ring was opened during the reaction.
