New method for preparation of 2,3-thiophenedicarboxylic and 3,4-thiophenedicarboxylic acids and their 4,5-dihydro and 2,5-dihydro analogs

Abstract: A method new for preparation of 2,3-thiophenedicarboxylic acid and modified for preparation of 3,4-thiophenedicarboxylic acid using the same starting compounds, i.e. methyl thioglycolate and ethyl acrylate, and including selective preparation of methyl 3-oxotetrahydrothiophene-2-carboxylate and methyl 4-oxotetrahydrothiophene-3-carboxylate from methyl 3-thiaadipate has been described. The method can be used also for preparation of the respective dihydro analogues of these acids.
