Hemicelluloses in the young twigs of Salix alba. II. Isolation and characterization of the coarse hemicellulose fractions from the bark

Abstract: Fractionation of the polysaccharide part from the bark of the young twigs of s. alba and stepwise extn. of the holocellulose with solns. of 2.5% NH₄OH, 4.5% NaOH, a mixt. of 8.0% NaOH and 4.0% H₃BO  and 0.05N HCl is studied. The hemicelluloses present in the bark differ considerably from those present in the inner (woody) part. The noncellulose polysaccharide part in the bark contains higher amts. of L-arabinose, D-glucose, and D-galactose while, in the woody part, the (4-O-methyl-D-glucurono)xylan is predominant.
