The sulfonation of furfural diethyl acetal and furfural diacetate

Abstract: By the sulfonation of furfural diethyl acetal or furfural diacetate with pyridine sulfotrioxide, according to reaction conditions, monosulfonic or disulfonic acids of furfural diethyl acetal or furfural diacetate were prepd. They were isolated as Ba salts. It was detd. that the sulfo groups are in α-position by oxidn. with Br water in the cold.
