Acetylation of amines with α-acetoxyacrylonitrile

Abstract: Exothermic reaction of α-acetoxyacrylonitrile (I) with amines was used for selective monoacetylation of amino compds. Dioxane, CHCl₃, or Et₂O served as solvents; a 2:1 molar ratio of amine to I was used. The reagent did not react with alc. or phenolic OH. Ethanolamine, glycine, and its derivs. were successfully acetylated.
