Oscillographic polarography of organic compounds in anhydrous NH4NO3nNH3

Abstract: In a.-c. oscillographic polarography with a dropping Hg electrode, a liquid mixt. of anhyd. NH4NO3 and NH3 at 0-20° was used as supporting electrolyte. Characteristic inflections on the curve dE/dt = f(E) were obtained with org. (nitro compds., quinones, ketones, aldehydes, alkaloids) as well as inorg. compds. Quinones gave 2 reversible inflections, while the corresponding hydroquinones were inactive. Papaverine, morphine, and benzidine gave inflections which were capacitive in nature. The behavior of metal cations was similar to that in aq. solns.
