Abstract: The correlation of the results of infrared spectroscopy and of the n-d.-mol. wt. method applied to distillates and their chromatographic fractions provided an indication of the presence of the following structural types in the mixt. of hydrocarbons: (1) monocyclic aromatic compds. with long alkyl substituents combined with naphthenic structures; (2) condensed aromatic structures with long alkyl side chains; (3) condensed monosubstituted structures with short alkyl side chains and with uncondensed monosubstituted benzene rings. Chromatographic studies indicate that in hydrocarbon mixts. the sensitivity to oxidation is greatest for condensed structures and smallest for more highly substituted aromatic compds. and combined aromatic-naphthenic types. In chromatography, oxidized structures occur together with nonoxidized aromatic compds. The increased polarity of oxidized aromatic compds. induces the formation of ppts. which, after cleavage of the side chain, are pptd. from a nonpolar medium.
