The hydrolytic cleavage of chicken-feather protein

Abstract: The hydrolytic cleavage of protein (keratin type) from chicken feathers by mineral acids and hydroxides was studied. Hydrolysis with Ba(OH)2 had a destructive effect on protein with decrease in amino N to one half as compared with acid hydrolysis. After hydrolysis in 6N HCl or 8N H2SO4, 19 amino acids were detd. by chromatography.
